Your skin is your body's largest organ, built to protect you from the elements. You, in turn, must protect and care for it.

Hit the Slopes

  • If you have dry skin, take extra precautions to keep skin supple. Dry skin reacts most severely to extreme weather conditions.
  • Arm skin for the whistling wind with skin care staples, sunscreen and moisturizer. UV rays still pose a serious threat to skin in cold weather.
  • Bundle up. Wear gloves, a neck warmer, a hat and goggles to shield skin from sub-zero temperatures.
  • Prevent chapped lips with frequent lip balm applications. Choose a balm with SPF protection.

Under the Sun

  • Nature sure has a keen sense of irony - nothing looks better with your white summer wardrobe than a bronze glow, - and nothing is more harmful to your skin. If you're logging-in beach time, you MUST protect skin from harmful UV rays.
    • Apply sunscreen liberally before putting on your bathing suit. Don't forget your neck, ears and the tops of your feet. Have a friend make sure your back is covered.
    • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15
    • Reapply sunscreen every few hours, after swimming and post-exercise.
    • Repeatedly slather lips with an SPF lip balm.
  • Self-Tan - Achieve a bronzed glow without risking your health.
    • After thoroughly exfoliating, liberally apply a self-tanner featuring split second absorption. Be sure to apply evenly and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
    • As an added bonus, look for a self-tanner that locks moisture into skin.
    • Use self-tanners year round for a healthy glow in any season.
  • If you must tan, tan smart.
    • Shade your face with a floppy hat.
    • Keep hours in the sun to a minimum.
    • Limit sun exposure from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when sun is strongest
  • When the sun sets, it's time to treat your skin.
    • Nourish skin with a rich moisturizer. Vitamin E and cocoa butter moisturizers replenish and restore skin post-sun.
    • Cool over-exposed skin with an aloe gel or spray.
    • For super cooling power, stick after-sun products in the refrigerator before getting beached.

Urban Adventure
In urban centers, high levels of industrial pollution generate free radical activity in the air, robbing skin of oxygen. Protect your skin from airborne toxins with a sunscreen containing antioxidants.

The Great Outdoors
Mosquitoes and ticks and wasps…Oh My! Bug sprays deter bugs, but unfortunately medicinal bug spray scents deter humans. For a sting free time in the great outdoors, try an essential oil based spray.

After the Fact
One week after a beach vacation, Scott J. of Scott J. Aveda Lifestyle Salons & Spas suggests using an allover exfoliating body polish. He says, "Right after a vacation skin positively glows, but after a week, skin appears dulls and ashy. A body polish restores the glow."
