Concierge.com Survey Reveals Budgeting Time and Money Tops List of Travel Resolutions

NEW YORK (January 9, 2001) -- Despite year-end speculation of an economic downturn, a recent survey by Concierge.com, the premier Web site for modern travelers, revealed that on average, Americans plan on spending 10 percent more on travel in 2001 than they did in 2000. However, no matter what amount of money consumers plan on spending, the survey found more than one-quarter of Americans will make "staying within their budget" a top resolution.

The "Concierge.com New Year/New Vacations Survey," conducted in mid-December 2000, found that more than 35 percent of the population had already planned vacations for the New Year, and the trend among travelers is toward shorter-length vacations. Almost two-thirds of adult Americans under 54 said they are more likely to plan vacations of five days or less and travelers over 65 are less likely to take shorter vacations (63 percent vs. 43 percent). Additionally, more men than women (39 percent vs. 31 percent) have already planned getaways for 2001.

Even though Americans claim they feel stressed and overworked, surprisingly, the survey found that more than 45 percent of the population did not use all of their vacation days in 2000. Sixty-four percent of those with unused vacation time at the end of the year attributed being too busy to plan or take a vacation as the culprit most responsible for their remaining days.

"The travel industry has recognized the need to offer consumers shorter vacation packages, such as weekend cruises, as it's become increasingly more difficult for Americans to plan and get away for extended periods of time," said Wendy Perrin, spokesperson, Concierge.com/consumer news editor, Condé Nast Traveler. "Time-crunched travelers can turn to Concierge.com to find these short getaway packages, then use the site's destination information and insider advice to customize these trips to their particular needs. Thus travelers can get a vacation that's short and efficient, yet also as enjoyable and rewarding as possible."

And the Resolutions Continue...

Travel resolutions for 2001 include taking more vacations (22 percent), to be more spontaneous (15 percent), to pack more lightly (12 percent) and to spend more time planning (nine percent). One easy way to adhere to a budget without compromising the fun of a vacation is taking the time to research and plan before heading out the door.

Travel Personalities

When asked to choose a personality type that best describes them, including "Family Ties," "Survivor," "Baywatch," "Masterpiece Theatre" and "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," almost two-thirds (38 percent) of Americans selected "Family Ties," with women, the traditional caretakers, choosing this title almost twice as often as men (46 percent vs. 28 percent). Men aligned their travel habits more with the personalities of "Survivor" and "Baywatch" (20 percent and 17 percent respectively). Americans over 65 identify more with "Masterpiece Theatre" than those under 35 (15 percent vs. 4 percent). City residents are more likely to seek vacations with a little bit of pampering (nine percent vs. three percent for non-city residents) as they felt the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" stereotype best captured their travel personality.

Survey Background

The "Concierge.com New Year/New Vacations Survey" was conducted by International Communications Research of Media, PA. A national sample of 1,003 adults 18 years of age or older were interviewed by telephone from December 8 to December 12, 2000. For a survey of this size, the sampling error is +/3.1% at the 95 percent confidence level.
